boo hiss rockism

the rockist straw-man totally does exist! i was talking to someone about music last night, the conversation went roughly like this:

him: music with guitars is good and better than music without guitars. electronic music is "fake".

me: you are an idiot.

except it lasted for half an hour. that was the basic content, though.

COMMENTS:

og said: "electronic music is fake, but music made in real time with electric guitars is real and therefore intrinsically better" is one of the most obnoxious declarations of musical idiocy. there are so many things wrong with that idea that my head feels like it's going to explode whenever i think about it for more than a minute.

jim said: The only real music involves jugs, gut-buckets, and old men saying "Yehaw." Possibly "Woo."

Mat said: I can understand frustration with those who refuse to expand their musical horizons, but the whole "rockist" label seems like childish name-calling to me. If your goal is to spread the joy of good music to otherwise myopic listeners, fitting them with an antagonistic label seems like a big step backward.

rmd said: labeling someone as "rockist" is not name-calling, it's just a useful descriptor. fwiw, i believe the term was originally not used in the pejorative. it's not a term i just conjured up to snarkily put down the guitar boyz (i am not nearly that clever), it has a lot of history behind it.

rmd said: but all this is clearly irrelevant, as jim's comment is completely otm.

Mat said: Based on the content of your post, I thought you were interested in convincing "rockists" that their position keeps them from enjoying non-rock music that is very good. Re-reading your post, perhaps you are just interested in just calling them idiots. If you do want to convince them that there is other good music out there, though, I don't think calling them a rockist is going to help. That's all. The word may have a nice history and be perfectly useful to you when talking to those in the know, but my guess is that very few people think of the term rockist in the same way you do. That's why I don't think it's very useful to throw it around.

rmd said: dude! did you read what jim said? none of this matters.
