I know it’s sort of old news, but I still have a rage subroutine in place in the back of my brain about the fact that Leona Helmsley’s bitey dog Trouble (pictured here) was left 12 million dollars* when the bitch (the owner, not the dog) died. According to this article from the New York [...]
Oh Wow
Friends: Kim Williams-Guillen, the researcher I worked with in Mexico in 2006, has been published in Science! That’s really big, and I’m very proud of her. Her research was also written up in the New York Times’ science section. Wow! I don’t have a copy of the paper, but I’ll try to get one soon [...]
A Manifesto that I Liked but is not Mine
The following is an essay (of sorts) from George Saunders’s recent book, The Braindead Megaphone. I liked it a lot, and so in lieu of an actual post, I’m just going to share it with you guys, in recognition of the 5th anniversary of the Most Awesome War Ever . I hope George doesn’t mind:
Now [...]
Dolphin Rescues Pygmy Whales, People Coo and Gurgle
I’m not saying this story about a bottlenose dolphin in New Zealand rescuing two stranded pygmy sperm whales isn’t awesome. I think it’s great. Brief summary:
Two pygmy sperm whales, a mother and a calf, beached and became disoriented in a bay on the coast of New Zealand. Rescuers (human) arrived and tried to help [...]
RIP SHELDON BROWN
Sheldon Brown died recently of a heart attack after 64 years of being awesome. Bummer.
is it extinct? is it a “marscupial?” orly?
I was going to post this article about the origins of the domestic cat from the New York Times and say something like, “holy crap, what a badass article about the origins of cats wow isn’t that shit fascinating,” but I realized it’s not really that amazing of an article. Sure it talks a lot [...]
peelin’ back caps
Today I had the opportunity to observe a minor surgery at one of the labs at which I’ve been volunteering. Unfortunately, I don’t have pictures of the process that I took myself, as I didn’t bring my camera to the lab today, but I probably wouldn’t have been able to get very good pictures because [...]
Dribble down in VA
Friends, I just recently returned from Lexington, Virginia, home of (among other things) Washington & Lee University, the Virginia Military Institute and Owen’s mom. I can’t say much for the town or either of the universities, although there appears to be a lot of The History in the area, and my only impression of Washington [...]
File this under ‘b’ for Brain Disorders
Last night I experienced what is apparently known as a “scintillating scotoma.” I was sitting in my kitchen reading when I began to notice that I was having trouble seeing through my left eye. I ignored it for as long as possible, thinking it would probably go away, but it didn’t. At least not within [...]
whatever new blogger. WHATEVER.
So, this is a picture of the feet of the tiniest premature baby ever born. She/it was born like a year early or something. I don’t know. I really just wanted to know if anyone else thought those little feet looked like a delicious fruit candy.
Well?
