Snow. Ice. Cold. Coldest day since 1988, people are saying.
The chickens huddled under their coop all of Sunday, but still managed to lay two eggs, collectively. The top dressing of mulch i threw around the garden did little to soften the damage from consistently sub-freezing temperatures, but It seems like the kale, the woody plants, and the new tree made it through. Its supposed to snow again and maybe freezing rain tonight so it might all be a lot harsher. Lots of plant mortality.
So in the spirit of looking at the brighter side, here are pictures taken while the garden was in a verdant prime, one day before the great chill! Look for the “after” pictures soon.

It was warm through September.

Anti-lawn movement sweeps its way westward across the property line. Garlic survived the ice so far.

The favas look sad now, and I think the leeks bit it. The Feijoa did fine, and the nasturtium died.

Lively garden for mid december.

So frozen right now. Maybe it will weather through? If not, then soup.

Peas are dead, pac choi it dead-ish, dunno about carrots.

Asparagus ferns look so dead. Could be fine.

Fiona! She layed her intestines out her vent back in August. After we kept putting them back inside her and rubbing Preparation H on them, they stayed inside. Finally, on 12/11, she layed again. We are so proud of her.

We moved the coop and built a new run and pen. They love it.

Mushroom logs. Shiitake, Maitake, Reishi. Maybe this cold snap will force a flush? Pretty Arum Lilies coming up.

Our (first) new back stairs. An idea I had to squeeze more plants into our little yard. I think they turned out great. Will recreate them for your house for $1,000.

And here is the finished back patio! Pony makes a guest appearance. Patio turned out great. Andrew Tillinghast made the lovely path between backyards.

My beloved Bearss lime. I love this plant so much. I am not entirely sure why. Citrus just makes you happy. Flowers a lot. Makes cute and delicious fruit.
I wish I had a camera to take more spontaneous pictures. But alas. I work rarely.

I did not know this. I give great credit to Brown Sarah! All I saw was Mr. Tillinghandsome laying some stone.
Fiona laid!? Such an overwhelming overcoming of unlikely odds! Miss home so much.
